The Ukulele: from Madeira to Hawaii
The term ukulele is Hawaiian, but the instrument is originally from the Portuguese island of Madeira.
Samantha Muir explores the history of the ukulele, with music composed in the 19th century by Candido Drummond de Vasconcelos, as well as some of the earliest music written for ukulele by Ernest Kaai and members of the Hawaiian Royal Family.
Much of this early repertoire was influenced, surprisingly, by European ballroom dance music.
